Waiting for Results
When the hardest part is not knowing
"The days and weeks between fertility tests and receiving your results can feel like some of the longest of your life. If you're finding this period difficult, you're not alone."
Why does waiting feel so hard?
Fertility investigations often involve periods of waiting.
Waiting for:
Blood test results.
Scan appointments.
Letters from the hospital.
Phone calls.
Follow-up consultations.
Treatment decisions.
Each wait can feel endless because the answers matter so much.
Unlike many other medical tests, fertility results don't just affect your health—they may shape the future you've been dreaming about.
It's normal to feel...
During this time, you might experience:
Hope
Fear
Anxiety
Frustration
Impatience
Sadness
Anger
Relief one moment...
Panic the next.
Some people find themselves analysing every symptom.
Others constantly replay appointments in their mind.
Many find it difficult to concentrate on anything else.
These reactions are common when you're living with uncertainty.
The internet can be both helpful and overwhelming
Searching online can sometimes provide reassurance and help you understand medical terms.
But it can also lead to information overload.
Remember:
Every person's fertility journey is different.
Someone else's test result, diagnosis or treatment outcome may have very little to do with your own.
If something you read leaves you feeling more frightened than informed, it may be worth discussing it with your healthcare team instead.
Try not to read too much into silence
Waiting doesn't usually mean something is wrong.
Hospitals and fertility clinics often need time to:
Process samples.
Review scans.
Compare results.
Arrange multidisciplinary discussions.
Prepare follow-up plans.
A longer wait is not usually a clue about what your results will show.
Looking after yourself while you wait
Although it's easier said than done, it may help to:
Keep a routine where you can.
Spend time with people who make you feel supported.
Get outside if you're able.
Eat regularly and stay hydrated.
Continue activities you enjoy.
Write down any questions for your next appointment.
You don't have to think about fertility every minute of every day.
Giving yourself permission to enjoy moments of ordinary life isn't giving up.
Preparing for your appointment
Before you receive your results, it can help to write down:
What tests have I had?
What was each test looking for?
What questions do I want answered?
Should I take someone with me?
Would it help to make notes during the appointment?
Many people remember very little once the consultation begins.
That's completely understandable.
If the results aren't what you hoped
It's okay to feel disappointed.
It's okay to cry.
It's okay if you don't immediately know what questions to ask.
Many fertility journeys involve unexpected turns.
One result rarely tells the whole story.
Even difficult news often leads to a clearer understanding of what happens next.
If the results are reassuring
A normal result can bring enormous relief.
But sometimes it can also feel confusing.
You may wonder:
"If everything is normal... why am I still not pregnant?"
That question is valid too.
A reassuring result doesn't always provide all the answers—it simply rules out one possible explanation.
Questions you may wish to ask your doctor
Can you explain my results in plain language?
What does this result rule out?
Does anything still need investigating?
What happens next?
Is there anything I should be doing while I wait for the next step?
A gentle reminder
Waiting is not wasted time.
Even when nothing seems to be happening, information is being gathered, reviewed and pieced together.
Every result brings you one step closer to understanding your fertility journey.
Georgina's Note ❤️
If I'm honest, I sometimes think the waiting was one of the hardest parts.
Waiting for appointments.
Waiting for scans.
Waiting for phone calls that never seemed to come quickly enough.
It often felt as though my whole life was divided into two stages:
Before the next result... and after it.
Looking back now, I wish someone had told me this:
You don't have to put your entire life on hold while you wait.
There will still be laughter.
There will still be ordinary days.
There will still be moments of peace, even if they only last a few minutes.
And whatever those results eventually say, they won't define your worth.
They won't measure how much you'll love a child.
They won't tell the story of your courage.
They're simply another piece of information—one more step towards understanding what comes next.
Be gentle with yourself.
You're carrying far more than anyone can see.
